Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the second-most common cancer in men in the United States. Every three minutes, a man will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is curable if caught early. Knowing all of the right information about the screening process and taking the correct preventative measures can help save lives.

What is the prostate

  • The prostate is a walnut-sized gland of the male reproductive system. It is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.

What is prostate cancer?

  • Prostate cancer is a tumor that most often starts at the outer part of the prostate. It can spread to the inner portion once it further develops.

Although there are no early warning symptoms of prostate cancer, there are some urinary symptoms to look out for.

Symptoms to look out for:

  • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night
  • Difficultly starting or holding back urination
  • Weak, dribbling or interrupted flow of urine
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Difficult in having an erection
  • A decrease in the amount of fluid ejaculated
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvis or thighs

Although you may not be able to control your family’s history of cancer, or getting older, you can help catch prostate cancer in its earliest and most treatable stage. Schedule annual screenings with your Care Team if you are a man over 50.
