From the First Test Through the First Year: Chapa-De’s Maternal Child Health Program

Pregnancy is a life-changing event that leaves many parents-to-be wondering where to even start. Two little lines on a pregnancy test lead to appointments, diet changes, even holiday restrictions. It can feel overwhelming. Luckily, you have a team ready to help in the Chapa-De Maternal Child Health Department. We can help provide the vital care your growing baby needs while also being there to support you through every step of pregnancy and beyond.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is essential for ensuring the health of your unborn child. These appointments start off with a monthly visit that turns into every two weeks and then weekly towards the end of your pregnancy. During these check-ins, you can expect:

First & Second Trimester:

  • Vitals Check:
    • Weight
    • Blood Pressure
    • Heart Rate
  • Medication Discussion
    • Has there been any change to your medications?
  • Baby Heart Rate Check
  • Noninvasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) and Genetic Testing
  • Ultrasound Referrals
  • Belly Measurement in the Second Trimester through to the end of your pregnancy
  • Opportunity for Questions

Third Trimester:

The third trimester check-in appointments are very similar to the first and second trimester. However, they become more frequent. You will start to have appointments every two weeks after 28 weeks and then every week after 36 weeks. Between 36 and 37 weeks, your provider might do a couple of tests. Based on the results, you will start to get a better picture of what your timeline may be until baby comes.

This is also the time when you will start having your appointments with pregnancy specialists who visit Chapa-De from Camelia Womens Health. This will help you get to know their team before they deliver your baby at Mercy San Juan Medical Center.

The third trimester is also the time for essential vaccines that help protect your baby in their first year of life. Be sure to talk to your provider about T-DAP (Whooping Cough), RSV, and the updated COVID-19 vaccinations.

Feel the Luv:

With every prenatal appointment through Chapa-De, expecting parents can earn Incentive Points that act as cash at our Baby Luv closet. Goodies such as:

    • Monitors
    • Essentials
    • And so much more

After Delivery:

That first year after birth is hard and you don’t have to do it alone. The same providers from your prenatal care team will see your baby for their first check-up 3-5 days after birth.  They will also see the delivering parent for a follow-up 3 weeks after birth to make sure all is healing well. After that, you and baby will return to your Chapa-De family care providers. Plus, a Registered Nurse (RN) who specializes in supporting families with young babies  will be there to support you every step of the way!

Here are some things you can expect at appointments your first year:

      • Baby’s vaccines
      • Postpartum care to assure that you recover well after the baby is born
      • Newborn care to assure your baby has a healthy start in life
      • Family counseling available
      • Future family planning
      • And more

Coming up! We are also proud to be partnering with local organizations to offer lactation groups and classes right from our very own clinics. Follow us on social media to keep updated on start dates and locations.
