NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK
NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK Chapa De Indian Healthcare Auburn Grass Valley
March 19th – March 26th is National Poison Prevention Week, a week when Chapa-De Indian Health and organizations around the country are talking to people about the seriousness of poison related injuries and how you can stay safe.
What to know about poison related injuries:
- Poison is the #1 cause of injury-related death in United States
- Poisons act fast
- The effects of poison related injuries can sometimes be fatal
Common poisons:
- Household cleaning products
- Cosmetics and other personal care products
- Prescription medication (if instructions are not followed)
- Pesticides
- Contaminated water
- Lead
- Food that is not prepared properly
- Bites from ticks, spiders, snakes
Here’s what you can do to stay safe and keep your children out of harm’s way:
- Keep household cleaning products in cabinets out of the children’s reach. You may consider putting a lock on your cabinet if it’s under your sink or somewhere accessible to children.
- When spraying pesticides around your yard remember to wear goggles, gloves and keep your skin covered. Make sure to wash your hands, clothes and other tools after. Store containers out of reach from children in a shed or away from where you keep food and other daily used products and clothes.
- When taking prescription medication, it is important to follow the instructions given to you by your doctor. If you buy medicine over-the-counter, make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle. Keep these types of medication out of bathrooms used by young children and teens.
- Some prescription medication might note dosage in terms of a teaspoon. Remember that a teaspoon is not necessarily the same size as a kitchen spoon. Click HERE to see what a teaspoon is.
- If you ever have any questions about dosage, consult a Chapa-De physician.
- Some houses may have led pipes and if they aren’t cared for properly, they can contaminate your home’s water. To learn more about how to test your water for lead, click HERE.
