Handwashing Awareness Month
Chapa-De Health Care Auburn Grass Valley
December is Handwashing Awareness Month
Handwashing is important at home, at work and when you are out and about in order to help prevent sickness and to keep everyone in your family healthy. Germs are everywhere and Chapa-De wants to remind our patients of the importance of washing your hands, especially during flu season.
Studies have shown that washing your hands before eating can prevent 1 in 3 diarrhea-related sicknesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as the cold or the flu. It is important to properly wash your hands several times per day in order to remove all of the germs that can be collected on your hands.
The Right Way to Wash Your Hands:
- Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap.
- Scrub all surfaces of your hands, including your palms, backs, fingers, between your fingers, and under your nails. Be sure to scrub for at least 20 seconds.
*Hint: you can hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice *
- Rinse your hands under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dryer.
When should I wash my hands?
- Before, during and after preparing food.
- Before eating food.
- Before and after caring for someone who is sick.
- Before and after treating a cut or wound.
- After using the bathroom, changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the bathroom.
- After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
- After touch an animal, animal food/treats or animal feces (poop).
- After touching garbage.
Germs are everywhere around us! By washing our hands often throughout the day, we can reduce our risk of spreading illnesses and help keep ourselves and our families safe during this flu season.
