We at Chapa-De would like to take this opportunity to speak with patients and caregivers about depression, mental illness, and behavioral health.

In recent months, it seems like whenever we turn on the news, there is another story about suicide or injuries related to behavioral health disorders like depression and mental illness. These are not uncommon occurrences and mental health is a topic that should be talked about.

What are the causes of depression or mental illness?

There are many different factors that can lead to depression and mental illness. Genetics play a big role. If your parents struggled with mental illness, your chances increase. It also has to do with the way in which your brain is wired. This means that some people can be more susceptible, given their biological make up.

But it’s not all about genetics. Trauma also plays an important factor. Men and women who have served in the armed forces are at higher risk, due to posttraumatic stress disorder. People can become depressed if a family member or friend die, or if they were a victim of child abuse or domestic abuse.

Since there are so many factors that can play into this disease, it is important to know the signs.
