Most of us know someone who has or had cancer. There are over 100 types of cancers, and 1.7 million new cases will be diagnosed in 2018 throughout the world. Cancer is common, even in our local communities; Chapa-De’s healthcare teams regularly screen for, discover and help coordinate care for patients battling the disease.

Sunday June 3rd is National Cancer Survivors Day. On this day we celebrate those that have fought and survived, and remember those whose journeys were cut short. We are also using this day to encourage and support those that have been diagnosed, to let them know that they are not alone and that there is hope.

It is also a good time to raise awareness about the continued fight after someone survives their battle with cancer and the need for ongoing support. There are 15 million cancer survivors in the U.S. and with new cancer research and treatments, this number is sure to grow.

Once a patient is cured of cancer, there can still be a number of complications that may follow including:

  • Lasting medical concerns
    • Many women that go through chemotherapy will have lasting effects on their reproductive organs.
    • Cancer treatments can take a toll on bodily organs that weren’t initially affected by the cancer.
  • Insurance and payment issues.
  • Lack of attention from cancer specialists and doctors, monitoring one’s life after cancer.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Trouble finding a job.

How can Chapa-De help?

At both of our community health centers in Auburn and Grass Valley, Chapa-De offers excellent primary medical care and early detection screenings for cancer. We also provide post cancer services, helping to monitor patients’ blood work, vitals, and overall health after they have beaten the disease.

In the event that you require services not available at our healthcare centers, such as Oncology services, we will help coordinate care with a specialist. We can refer you to any specialist in the region if they accept your health insurance plan and if they are accepting new patients. At Chapa-De, we will work to make sure that you are seen and cared for.

Depending on the type of cancer and the stage that it is caught during, can mean the difference between a speedy recovery or a long road ahead. Regardless of what type of cancer it is or when and where it is found, it is important to remember that every day people beat cancer and that your Chapa-De Care Team is here to support you.

To learn more about the services provided at Chapa-De or to speak with a member of our team, call (530) 887-2800 for our Auburn location and (530) 477-8545 for our Grass Valley location and visit us at chapa-de.org.
