National Bullying Prevention Month

National Bullying Prevention Month

Chapa-De Health Care Auburn Grass Valley

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. During this month, Chapa-De wants to help educate and raise awareness of bullying so we can be united in our efforts to prevent it in our local communities.

More than 1 out of every 5 students has reported being bullied at school. Less than 40% of kids who are being bullied will report it to an adult or loved one. Since many bullying incidents go unreported, it is important for parents and loved ones to know the warning signs.

What is bullying?

  • Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived threat.
  • Types of bullying:
    • Verbal Bullying- saying or writing mean things
    • Social Bullying- hurting someone’s relationship or reputation
    • Physical Bullying- hurting a person’s body or possessions
    • Cyber Bullying- verbal or social bullying occurring online via social media platforms or through any other electronic technology

Signs your child is being bullied:

  • Unexplainable injuries
  • Loss of destroyed personal items such as clothing, electronics or jewelry
  • Frequently faking illnesses or reasons to avoid school
  • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations
  • Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem

There are ways that you can help to stop bullying in your community. Educating your children about the effects of being on both sides of bullying can help deter bullies and help to keep other children safe. Build a safe environment in your home, or community to make kids feel safe and confident enough to ask for help.  Chapa-De reminds our patients to stay united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion in their communities, especially during National Bullying Prevention Month.
