Health Coverage Awareness Month
Chapa-De Indian Health Auburn Grass Valley | Medical Clinic
Having healthcare coverage can improve your health – without healthcare coverage many of us put off going to the doctor or seeking healthcare services because of the cost. This can result in missing out on meaningful preventative care or waiting until an issue is more serious and more complicated to treat before seeking help. This is why we want you to know your options and where to go for more information on finding the right coverage for you and your family.
What is health coverage?
Health coverage is a type of insurance plan that you buy or receive through the government that pays for medical care and treatment.
Where do you get health coverage?
There are a few places to get health coverage:
- Through an employer
- On the individual market, meaning purchasing your own insurance for you and/or your family
- Through the government
What if I can’t afford healthcare coverage?
In California, Medi-Cal (also known as Medicaid) provides free or low cost healthcare services to approximately one-third of all California residents. This program is designed for individuals and families who have limited income and resources. Most individuals who enroll in Medi-Cal pay nothing for coverage. Some are charged a low monthly premium – for example under the Medi-Cal for Families program, the monthly premiums are $13 per child per month up to a family maximum of $39 per month.
Chapa-De Eligibility Specialist, Gilbert Riojas, is also available to answer your questions about Medi-Cal and to assist you with the Medi-Cal application process. To schedule an appointment, please call (530) 887-2800 ext. 2883.
You can also apply for Medi-Cal online at www.CoveredCA.com or over the phone by calling your local county social services office. In Placer County call (530) 889-7610 or toll-free (888) 385-5160. In Nevada County call (530) 265-1340 or toll-free (888) 809-1340. In Sierra County call (530) 993-6721 or (530)289-3711.
If you do not qualify for Medi-Cal, you may instead be eligible for financial help through the Covered California insurance marketplace. Why is health coverage important?
Chapa-De’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of American Indians and low-income people in our communities. We do not want the cost of a visit to prevent you from getting care – therefore we want you to have coverage to help pay for your healthcare costs. Chapa-De is a safety net provider and accepts Medi-Cal and Medicare insurance plans.
If you are American Indian, we understand you receive care at our health centers and other Indian Health Service providers free of charge. However, outside services are not typically covered – this includes medical specialists, hospital stays, emergency room visits and medical x-rays. We encourage you to have coverage in case these services are needed.
For more information about coverage options, please meet with our Eligibility Specialist, Gilbert Riojas, who can be reached at 530-887-2800 ext. 2883.
