Today we celebrate California Indian Day. It is a day that is especially important to us all of us here at Chapa-De.

In 1974, Chapa-De was founded to help American Indians gain access to basic healthcare services, which was an urgent and critical need. At this time, a study was published that showed American Indians in California suffered from more health problems than the general population. American Indians in the state were found to have higher rates of:

  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Substance abuse
  • Infant death
  • Shorter lifespans
  • Heart disease

How did Chapa-De get its start?

When Chapa-De first opened in 1974, we were a small office in Auburn with one dental chair. Over the years, we have been able to expand our services based on the needs of our communities. Today we operate two non-profit health centers in Auburn and Grass Valley, which are overseen by an American Indian Board of Directors.

We are very proud to now provide a variety of state-of-the-art services in a culturally respectful and compassionate manner.

What does our mission continue to be?

Chapa-De remains committed to our founding and key purpose – to provide high-quality healthcare services to the American Indian and Alaskan Native people. We also welcome and care for low-income community members.

Our mission is to advance the health and well-being of American Indians and low-income individuals living in our communities by providing convenient access to high quality, compassionate care.

From our Diabetes Prevention Program and our Behavioral Health Program to our Baby Luv Program and Dental Care Department, we are always working to give back to the community that has always supported us.

Our mission could not be achieved without the trust and respect that we are so proud to receive from the community, especially the native community. It is you that has made Chapa-De a place of healing and safety. Today, we celebrate, thank and honor you.
