In 1983, President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. During that time, less than 2 million American’s suffered from this disease. Today, more than 5.4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s.
Chapa-De encourages our patients to get involved during the month of November, to help raise awareness for this disease.
What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s, the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss or other cognitive abilities that can interfere with daily life. It is a progressive disease, with symptoms worsening over time.
It is important to remember that Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging and can affect individuals with ages ranging from 40 to 65.
10 Early Signs & Symptoms of Alzheimer’s
- Memory loss that disrupts daily life
- Challenges in planning and solving problems
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure
- Confusion with time or place
- Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
- New problems with words in both speaking and/or writing
- Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
- Decreased or poor judgement
- Withdrawal from work or social activities
- Changes in mood and personality
