Many people struggle with substance abuse. Substance abuse affects every individual differently and impacts both the lives of those struggling and their loved ones. Recovering from substance abuse can be challenging, which is why we offer a variety of programs and services to help support our patients struggling with addiction. Keep reading to learn more.

What is substance abuse?

Substance abuse is when someone loses control over how much drugs and/or alcohol they use. Examples of substance abuse include alcoholism and addiction. In cases of substance abuse, the person is consuming more of the substance than their body can handle, leading to social or career issues, serious illnesses and sometimes death.

How do I know if I’m abusing substances?

Diagnosing substance abuse can be tricky. Many of us develop substance abuse issues over time and don’t always recognize the signs. Here are a few signs to look out for when evaluating how substance use if affecting your life:

  • Loss of control
  • Change in relationships with those close to you
  • Mood changes and emotional instability
  • Sleeplessness and increased activity
  • Angry and secretive behavior
  • Changes in how you talk
  • Changes in appearance
  • Loss of interest in hobbies
  • Missing work or school

Treatment

Treating substance abuse is very challenging. It takes a very strong commitment from the person seeking help and a strong support system of friends and family can be very helpful during both the treatment and recovery periods. Treatment will look different for every individual – there is no one simple cure or fix.
