One of the best ways to stay healthy both physically and mentally is through good nutrition. Eating well helps make sure your body stays fit and ready to conquer illnesses or other obstacles. March is National Nutrition Month, so if your nutrition is lacking, now is the time to improve it!
What is nutrition?
The word nutrition comes from the word nutrients, which are the things your body needs to stay healthy and work properly. Nutrients help you to grow, repair body tissue and build new muscle tissue. These three things keep you healthy and strong.
How to have good nutrition
Having good nutrition means you are eating well. There are many ways to eat well but doing so requires an understanding of the different food groups. By combining foods from different food groups, you can get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy. The five food groups are:
- Vegetables and legumes/beans
- Fruit
- Grain foods
- Lean meats and poultry, fish eggs, tofu, buts and seeds
- Milk, yogurt, cheese
- For more information about the five food groups, click HERE.
While it is important to make sure you are eating foods from all of the food groups, it is also important to monitor how much you are eating. The appropriate amount of a food is called a serving size. Making sure you don’t eat too much more than the recommended serving size is important to achieving good nutrition.
How to improve your nutrition
There are many ways to improve your nutrition. Some examples are:
- Eat three fruits every day
- Add beans to your diet
- Eat more vegetables
- Stop eating when you are full
- Eat whole grains, like brown rice and whole wheat bread
- Eat two sources of low-fat dairy every day
- Use olive or canola oil
- Limit saturated fat
- Eat three meals every day
- Drink more water
