National Cholesterol Education Awareness Month
More than 102 million Americans over the age of 20 have cholesterol higher than the healthy level. This puts them at risk for heart disease. Chapa-De wants to remind our patients to get regular cholesterol checks during their annual check-ups to keep their hearts healthy!
High cholesterol can put you at risk for many medical conditions. These may include heart disease and stroke, which are the top causes of death in the United States. Your family’s health history and your current lifestyle will determine how often your cholesterol levels should be checked.

What is cholesterol?
- Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your body, and in many different foods. In order for your body to function naturally, you need a healthy amount of cholesterol in your blood.
How do you know if your cholesterol is high?
- Since there are no symptoms for high cholesterol, it is important to check your cholesterol levels on a regular basis. Doctors can do a simple blood test to check your cholesterol levels.
If you have high cholesterol, there are many different ways that you can go about treating it. Along with taking medication prescribed by your Chapa-De care team, you can also lower your cholesterol through different lifestyle changes.
Helpful tips to help lower your cholesterol:
- Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
- Get at least two and a half hours of moderate, or one hour of vigorous physical activity, multiple times per week.
- Maintain a healthy weight
