Have you paid someone a compliment recently? Today is National Say Something Nice Day. Make sure you take the time to make someone else feel a little extra special today!

Why we observe

National Say Something Nice Day is a day to make those around you feel good. We are all busy managing our lives and daily tasks and sometimes we forget or run out of time to go out of our way to make someone feel special. Today is the day to take that extra minute and use it to say something nice to a loved one. A compliment can go a long way!

Why you should observe

It is always important to be nice to others. When people are kind to each other it creates a happier environment. You never know what someone else is dealing with, and a compliment or nice thought can go much further than you think. If you don’t already, use today as a starting point for saying at least one nice thing every day.

How saying something nice can help others

Mental illnesses affect tens of millions of people in the United States every year. Nearly 1 in 5 adults live with a mental illness and more than half of these people do not receive treatment for their illness. A mental illness is any disease that affects your mind in a negative way, such as anxiety or depression. Click HERE to read more about mental illness.

One of the best ways to help someone with a mental illness and to help prevent mental illnesses from worsening is to offer them love and support. There are many ways you can support someone with a mental illness, beginning with a small act such as saying something nice today.

How you can observe

Today is all about being extra nice. Here are a few ideas for how you can make today special for everyone around you, including yourself!

  • Say something nice to someone at work
  • Leave someone a kind note
  • Start a say something nice board
  • Lead by example on social media
  • Do a good deed, like volunteering time to a charity or helping your neighbor mow their lawn
  • Take time to practice self-care and make sure you are happy
