Cancer Awareness
Chapa-De Indian Health Auburn Grass Valley | Medical Clinic
More than 1 in 3 Americans are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. More likely than not, you or one of your loved ones knows someone who is currently living with cancer or has fought cancer in the past. Today, we are joining forces nationwide to stand up to cancer and fight for healthy, cancer-free lives for all.
What is cancer?
There are many different kinds of cancer that can affect different parts of the body. Generally, the word cancer refers to a disease where your cells divide very quickly, creating a mass or lump, called a tumor, in your body.
Tumors are masses of tissue that can spread into other parts of your body and harm them. Cancerous tumors are malignant, meaning they will spread throughout your body and are dangerous to your health. Click HERE to read more about how cancer develops and spreads.
Who gets cancer?
Anyone can develop cancer at any age, but it is more likely to develop at an older age. Almost 9 out of 10 cancer cases are diagnosed at age 50 or older. Some cancers are hard to prevent because they are genetic or because we don’t know yet what causes them. However, there are some things you can do to help avoid developing certain cancers. For example:
- Wear sunscreen
- Don’t smoke or use tobacco products
- Limit the amount of alcohol you drink
- Do eat healthy and exercise

Are there different kinds of cancer?
There are hundreds of different kinds of cancer. The most common types of cancer are:
- Lung cancer
- Breast cancer
- Colorectal cancer (affecting the colon or rectum)
- Prostate cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Liver cancer
- Oesophagus cancer (affecting the throat)
- Cervix uteri cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Clicker HERE for a complete list of the most common types of cancer.
How is cancer treated?
Different cancers are treated in different ways. The three most common methods of treating cancer are:
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
In some cases, a clinical trial for cancer treatment can be an option. A clinical trial allows patients to take part in cancer research by using new and advanced medical sciences to treat their cancer. Stand Up to Cancer is an organization that supports clinical trials. Visit their website to learn more. Click HERE to view their website in Spanish.
Determining the right treatment plan depends on the type of the cancer, how advanced the cancer is and the patient’s overall health. Click HERE to read more about treating cancer.
