National Farmer’s Market week is recognized from August 5-11. It is a week that is used to promote healthy eating and help promote local farmer’s businesses across the nation. Chapa-De would like to take this week to thank all of the farmers in the Northern California region for producing healthy food options for our communities. We also want to share information on where to get healthy farm fresh foods to include in our diets.

Why farmer’s markets?

One of the main reasons is simply that the food is usually fresher and better quality. You may be asking, “what does fresher mean?” When shopping at a grocery store, there are a wide variety of options; many of which are packaged and processed. These types of foods often have added salt or sugars and may be grown using pesticides, hormones and antibiotics. The use of these types of modification may be harmful to our health.

Usually the food at Farmer’s Markets is grow naturally and the farmers bring their freshest options based on what is in season.

What are healthy options that are in season right now?

  • Blueberries
  • Eggs
  • Carrots
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Cherries
  • Strawberries
  • Potatoes
  • Zucchini

Are farmer’s markets more expensive?

Many times, people find farmer’s markets to be slightly more expensive than going to the grocery store. Farmers don’t have the ability to cut costs like major corporations do. But this shouldn’t discourage you. There are programs that promote healthy eating for low-income families.

CalFresh Bonus Bucks Program at Farmers Markets

CalFresh is a benefits program that assists low-income families in getting healthy food for their families. A local nonprofit, the Alchemist Community Development Corporation, offers “Bonus Bucks” when community members use their CalFresh EBT Debit Cards at participating farmers markets in Sacramento County and Placer County. This helps to make sure families have the ability to buy fresh food.
