Obesity Awareness Month

About 1 in every 5 children in the United States are overweight or obese. Children who suffer from obesity are at risk for health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and type two diabetes. Childhood obesity is 100% preventable and with the help of communities, health care professionals and families, we can work together to help kids become more active and make healthier choices.

Chapa-De wants to help make a difference for kids by helping to spread the word about strategies for preventing childhood obesity!

Childhood obesity is not only dangerous to a child’s current health but it can also lead to health problems in the future. Children who suffer from childhood obesity are more likely to suffer from obesity as an adult, which can lead to lifelong physical and mental health issues.

Ways to prevent childhood obesity and support healthy growth in children:

  • Achieve an energy balance to make sure children get adequate sleep, take part in regular physical activity and eat the right number of healthy calories.
  • Provide high nutrition, lower calorie foods, such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Limit food with higher-calorie ingredients, such as added sugar and solid fats.
  • Ensure access to water as a no-calories alternative beverage to sugar-sweetened drinks.
  • Help your child get the right amount of physical activity each day. Limit screen time and encourage them to get active outside.

On average, children aged 8-18 spend an average of six hours either watching TV or playing video games each day. The time spent indoors watching TV and not being active can greatly contribute to childhood obesity. Help your children and other children get out and play, in order to promote physical activity and healthy growing.

Take the steps to establish healthy habits with your children, and help prevent childhood obesity. This can greatly lower your child’s risk for health complications. It is also key for Type 2 Diabetes prevention. Learn more by talking to your Chapa-De Care Team.
