Do American Indians Need Health Insurance?
Yes. Emergency visits, hospitalizations and specialty care received outside of tribal health facilities are often not covered by Indian Health Service. These situations can be financially devastating and can limit the options if you do need to see a specialist.
Medi-Cal Insurance Coverage
Medi-Cal is California’s health care program for low-income residents. This program pays for a variety of medical, behavioral health, and dental services for children and adults.
You can apply for Medi-Cal benefits regardless of sex, race, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability, or veteran status. You must live in the state of California and eligibility is based on income and family size.

What is Covered California?
Covered California is a free service that connects residents with brand-name health insurance. It is a great resource for Californians who do not qualify for Medi-Cal and who have a hard time affording health insurance.
The single Covered California application will tell you if you qualify for Medi-Cal or any of the reduced costs Covered California insurance options.

What is open enrollment?
Open enrollment is the time of year when everyone can apply for a plan through Covered California. It is open now, with coverage beginning on January 1. Outside open enrollment, people who experience qualifying life events can apply during special enrollment.
