The holiday season is filled with yummy foods, sweets, and treats. But enjoying the holidays does not have to set back your health goals! In this blog, we wanted to provide a few tips to help you promote your health this holiday season.

Cooking Tips

The best way to eat a healthy diet is to focus on a well-balanced meal. Most foods are okay to eat in moderation. It is important to eat plenty of healthy fats and fiber, and to keep your plate colorful.

The CDC recommends sticking to healthy fats, which can come from:

  • Lean meats and fish
  • Olive oil
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Avocados

Fiber is an important part of your diet. Some good sources of fiber include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Beans and peas

Colorful natural foods are full of vitamins and minerals. The CDC encourages everyone to eat plenty of these foods for a balanced diet. Examples of colorful natural foods are:

  • Dark leafy greens like spinach or fresh herbs
  • Vegetables such as peppers, broccoli, or tomatoes
  • Fresh fruits

Diabetes Prevention Program

Eating a healthy diet is a great way to lower your risk of Diabetes. If you are at high risk of developing Diabetes, we encourage you to check out the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) at Chapa-De. It is a year-long program that helps Chapa-De patients to avoid the onset of diabetes and to live healthier. Participants learn about eating healthy, being physically active and managing stress. It aims to help maintain your weight loss and healthy lifestyles.

The program structure is:

  • Weekly classes for 10 weeks
  • Bi-weekly classes for 6 weeks
  • Monthly sessions

Participants in the program also get free access to exercise equipment and our lending library with DVDs and books about nutrition and fitness.

The program is open to all Chapa-De patients over the age of 18. You must not have a diagnosis of Diabetes to participate.
