Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month
Keeping your children’s eyes healthy and safe is an important part of maintaining their overall health. Your child should receive vision screenings during their regular well child visits with their medical team and we recommend that they start getting regular eye exams starting at age five.
Getting your children’s eyes checked regularly is a great way to prevent further damage to the eyes if a problem does exist. It is also important to watch your children for signs and symptoms that they may be having eye or vision problems.
Common signs of vision troubles in children can include:
- Frequently rubbing eyes
- Squinting
- Tilting or Turing head to look at objects
- Wandering eyes
- Squeezing eyes
- Clumsiness or problems in school can also be a sign
Eye safety is just as important as eye health. Every year thousands of children sustain eye injuries, 90% of which are preventable. By taking the proper steps, you can protect your child against eye injury.

Important reminders for eye safety
- All children should wear protection eyewear while participating in sports or recreational activities
- Avoiding toys with sharp or protruding parts and being conscious about purchasing age-appropriate toys for your children can help prevent injuries.
If your child should experience an eye injury seek medical attention immediately! DO NOT allow the child to rub or touch the eye, DO NOT apply medication to the eye, and DO NOT attempt to remove anything from the eye.
