Do you know the medical history of your family? Have any of your relatives had genetic diseases or illnesses? Do you have a disease or illness that someone else in your family has had too?

This month, Chapa-De would like to remind you of the importance of knowing the medical history of your family. Many diseases and illnesses are hereditary. It is important to know your family health record and know if you are at risk of any diseases or illnesses.

What is family health history?

Family health history is a record of all the health information available from your family’s medical records. It will typically list any disorders, diseases or illnesses that your relatives have had. A full record will show the health history of three generations.

Why is family health history important?

  • You can learn if you are at risk of a disease or illness
  • You can prepare for the possibility of having a disease or illness your relative may have had
  • You can change your lifestyle to prevent a disease your relative may have had
  • You can better understand the medical risks for children and family members

What illnesses might run in my family?

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Rarer conditions such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease

For American Indians and Alaskan Natives diabetes is very common. Diabetes is also hereditary, meaning it runs in families. This makes National Family Health History Month even more important.

It is important to note that just because one of your relatives suffers from a medical condition, it does not necessarily mean you or your children will too. Being aware of your family’s health history will help you lessen the chances though. Some hereditary illnesses are preventable. That is why it is important to educate yourself on your family’s health history.
