June is National Safety Month!

Chapa-De Indian Health encourages all patients to make safety a top priority this summer!

During National Safety Month, our focus is on preventing injuries and reducing the amounts of deaths related to unintentional accidents.

At Chapa-De, your safety is our priority!

What are the most common preventable accidents during the summer?

  • Drowning – never leave children unsupervised when they are in or near water. Placing a fence around larger pools helps prevent unsupervised access and using life-jackets when you’re in lakes, ponds or the ocean. Swimming lessons are key for all, from tiny children to adults.
    • CALL 911 IF A DROWNING ACCIDENT OCCURS
  • Burns – fire-related injuries from indoor cooking, BBQ’s and cookouts increases throughout the summer. Maintain smoke alarms indoors, use stove-guards to keep children from getting burns and to prevent injuries.
  • Falls – accidents from falls range far and wide, from children falling off changing tables to falls from summer sports and bikes. Parents, please use guardrails and stair gates, change diapers on the floor or use highchairs with safety belts and always enforce protective sports gear like helmets and knee pads.
    • PLEASE USE THE APPROPRIATE SAFETY GEAR
  • Road Traffic Injuries –using age-appropriate child safety seats protects infants and young children and keep a first aid kit in the car.
    • PLEASE DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE
  • Poisonings – keep cleaning supplies out of sight and, outdoors, be aware of dangerous chemicals left within the reach of curious children. Keep the toll-free number for the Poison Control Center (415-345-0820) near the phone.
    • CALL 911 IF CONSUMPTION OF POISON OCCURS

Unintentional injuries and deaths are 100% avoidable. Learning the correct way to do things and being able to recognize hazardous situations can help prevent accidents in the home, workplace, and on the road.
