Protect Your Skin This Summer!

Skin Cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States. During the month of June, Chapa-De encourages you to take necessary precautions in the sun during these hot summer months.

More than 3.3 million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer. Luckily, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer is highly treatable if detected early on.

3 Most Common Types of Skin Cancer:

  1. Basal Cell Carcinoma – occurs in areas of your body that are exposed to the sun and may appear as a pearly or waxy bump, or a flat flesh-like lesion. Areas such as your neck and your face are the most common areas for basal cell to occur.
  2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma – appears as a firm red nodule, or a flat lesion with a scaly crusted surface.
  3. Melanoma – can occur on any part of your body in normal skin that then becomes cancerous. Signs of this type of cancer include moles that change in shape color or size, small lesions with irregular borders that can appear in different colors and also large brownish spots with darker speckles.

How can I check for skin cancer symptoms?

  • Check for new or unusual growths
  • Changes in the size, shape or color of an exist sting skin spot

What are some Prevention tips that I can follow?

  • Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., stay in the shade, this is when the sun’s UV rays are at the highest.
  • Use a Broad-Spectrum sunscreen everyday with an SPF higher than 15.
  • Use a water-resistant sunscreen if partaking in an extended outdoor activity and always re-apply!
  • Routinely examine your skin for abnormalities that seem unordinary and have them checked by a doctor.
  • When skin cancer is found early, it is much easily treatable.
