We are proud to welcome two new residents, Dr. Karli Haugen and Dr. Camille “Mila” DeRome, to our Grass Valley care team! These doctors join us as part of the Sierra Nevada Family Medicine Residency Program, a program that prepares new doctors to deliver exceptional care in rural communities.
Meet Our New Residents
These residents will be with us until they graduate from our program in June 2027. They have completed a grueling intern year at Methodist Hospital in Sacramento. Now, they will gain even more experience by providing primary care under supervision at our Grass Valley health center. They will also work at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and with specialists in the community.
Karli Haugen, MD
Dr. Haugen is from Folsom, California. She is moving to Grass Valley with her partner Drew and their dog Kiké. She enjoys hiking, biking, and doing puzzle swaps. She studied at UC Davis and went to medical school at Loma Linda University. Dr. Haugen cares deeply about helping people with serious illnesses and is thinking about doing more training in palliative care.
Camille “Mila” DeRome, DO
Dr. DeRome is from Morgan Hill, California. She went to Seattle University and then to medical school in New Mexico. During school, she worked with Native communities in the Four Corners area. She now lives in Auburn with her husband, who is also a doctor. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and baking sourdough bread.
Returning Residents
These residents will be with us one more year until they graduate from our program in June 2026. They have already completed their intern year at Methodist Hospital in Sacramento and one year in Grass Valley. They will continue to provide care under supervision at Chapa-De and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.
Nick Sparr, MD
Dr. Sparr graduated from the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. He has an impressive work history in the medical field. He has worked as a nursing assistant in an adult inpatient psychiatry unit and spent twelve years working in phlebotomy. He also spent time working as a manager at a lab. He is passionate about community health and helping with local organizations.
Kelty White, MD
Dr. White graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology with Magna Cum Laude honors. She has focused on women’s health, rural medicine, and “gut” health. She spent ten years working in the service industry before and during medical school. She also worked for two years as a certified nursing assistant.
Read more about our first class of residents:
Is a Resident a Doctor?
A resident has completed college and medical school. They have received their Doctor of Medicine degree (MD or DO). Now they are completing firsthand training in their chosen specialty. This will allow them to become a board-certified family medicine doctor.
Do Residents give good quality care?
Yes. Patients often like having visits with residents because they see fewer patients per day. This way they can spend more time with each patient. They also just completed medical school and have the most up to date medical knowledge. Residents also work closely with an experienced Supervising Physician. Patients will receive exceptional care.
Is the Resident my new doctor?
They may be. Some Chapa-De patients in Grass Valley will be assigned to our Residents for their ongoing care. Others may see a Resident if their usual provider is not available.
Why This Program Matters
By training new doctors right here in our health centers, we’re helping bring accessible healthcare to our rural community. These residents bring new energy, fresh ideas, and a strong commitment to caring for American Indian and underserved patients.
We are proud to help train the next generation of doctors and thankful for the care they bring to our community.
