Disaster Preparedness
Chapa-De Indian Health Auburn Grass Valley | Medical Clinic
Many members of our community have been recently impacted by disasters, from the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, to the wildfires raging across Northern California. Talking about disaster preparedness can be difficult for some people, especially those who have lived through them. Some people will see a story about an earthquake or flood on TV and think “that would never happen here” or “that could not happen to me.” That is not true. Disasters can happen anywhere, at any time. The best way to reduce your risk during an emergency is to be prepared.
What is a Disaster?
There are many different types of disasters that can impact a community and individuals. Types of disasters include:
- Active shooter situations
- Earthquakes
- Extreme heat or extreme cold
- Floods
- Home fires or wildfires
- Pandemics
- Power outages
- And more
Disasters can cause a lot of harm. It is very important to be prepared in case one affects you or your community.

How Can I Be Prepared?
Disaster Preparedness can include a few different things:
- Put together an emergency kit
- Make a plan
- Stay informed and know where to find resources
Put together an emergency kit – Emergency kits should include the items you and your household would need for several days. The items include basic supplies like water, food, and a first aid kit. Your emergency kit should also include any items unique to your family, such as medications, or pet supplies.

Make a plan – Do you know what kinds of disasters can happen in your area? Knowing the risks of different disasters can help you be prepared for each. It is important to talk with your family about what you will do in case of an emergency. Your family may not all be in the same place when disaster strikes. Having a set plan on where to go and who will handle what, can help keep you all safe.

Stay informed and know where to find resources – In the event of a disaster, public safety officials use various systems to share information. Resources can typically be found through your local agencies, as well as through larger state, federal, and national groups.
