“Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu.”

While “flu season” typically begins in October, it can run all the way through May. You may have questions about the flu vaccine and Chapa-De’s health providers are happy to answer them for you. Meanwhile, here are some of the most common questions and concerns we encounter:

Can the flu vaccine make me sick?

The simple answer is NO. The flu vaccine made with the virus only carries inactive strains, which are not potent enough to cause illness.

Does the flu vaccine even work?

This one is tricky…according to the CDC, the average protection rate of the vaccine is about 50%. So, even with the vaccine, there is still a 50% chance you will end up with the flu.

But remember, getting the flu is pretty miserable, and can cause you to miss work, or school, or even the holidays. Once you have the flu, you can spread it to family members and friends. Of course, many people suffer from even worse complications from the flu, like pneumonia. Even if the vaccine does not prevent you from getting the flu, it still may help lessen the severity of it. When you consider all those things, it seems pretty worth it to get vaccinated.

Do I need a flu shot every year?

Yes. The CDC updates the vaccine every year, based on the most active flu strains.
