May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Millions of Americans live with a mental illness, so this month is a time to come together to fight the stigma, provide support, and educate the public on the importance of mental health. This month shines a light on the importance of caring for our mental health and how we can help others.

What is Mental Health?

The term mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and affects how we think, feel, and act. When our mental health is in good shape we feel good about ourselves, are able to handle stress, relate to others, and make good choices.

Why is Mental Health Important?

When our mental health suffers, our thinking, mood, and behavior are all negatively affected. This is why it is important to prioritize our mental wellbeing– not only when we are going through difficult times – but all of the time.

Mental health problems can lead to poor decision-making, decreased physical health, and impact our overall well-being. Experiencing one or more of the following feelings or behaviors can be an early warning sign of a mental health problem:

  • Eating or sleeping too much or too little
  • Pulling away from people and usual activities
  • Having low or no energy
  • Feeling numb or like nothing matters
  • Having unexplained aches and pains
  • Feeling helpless or hopeless
  • Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual
  • ….and more. Click HERE to see the full list.
