Celebrating 50 Years as a Community: Chapa-De Holds Open House

On Saturday, September 7th, our community of patients, providers, neighbors, and friends gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Chapa-De Indian Health.

We welcomed our community to join us in a special Open House event at our Auburn Health Center on Atwood Road. Festivities included a performance by two-time Grammy Award-winning native flute artist Mary Youngblood. Mary is the not only the first Native American to receive this honor, she is also the first Native American woman to professionally record the Native American Flute. Chapa-De patients may recognize her music playing over the speakers when visiting our health centers.

We are proud to have premiered 3 special videos telling our story. Chapa-De Indian Health was established in 1974 after it was found that the American Indian and Alaskan Natives in our area were experiencing higher rates of dental disease, Diabetes, and other serious illnesses than other demographics. What started as a single dental chair has turned into serving over 24,000 patients in need of whole-person care.

Representatives from our Diabetes, Substance Use Disorder, Maternal Child Health, and Care Coordination shared services and resources available for our patients and community.

Attendees were welcomed by the songs of a women’s drumming circle and enjoyed crafts such as beaded animal keychains, dream catchers, and custom face painting.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating 50 years of Chapa-De. We look forward to providing compassionate and culturally relevant care for another 50 years and beyond.

A special thank you to Mary Youngblood, drum keeper Sonia Keller LaPoint and Ishka for making this event even more special.
