Nutrition Services at Chapa-De

Nutrition Services at Chapa-De are part of our Diabetes Department. This department serves patients living with diabetes and patients who want to improve their health to prevent health complications such as Type 2 Diabetes. The mission is to help patients establish health goals and to provide the tools and support needed to accomplish those goals. Our approach is always patient centered. We encourage patients to take charge of their health.

Our providers, which include Registered Dietitians and Lifestyle Coaches, help patients set wellness goals in a reasonable and realistic way. We help patients define what progress looks like to them. We encourage behaviors that can make a difference to physical wellness and mental wellness. Some of our methods include:

  • Prioritizing happiness and quality of life at all steps
  • Developing meal plans based on the food a patient already enjoys
  • Encouraging positive self-talk
  • Weight neutral approaches to wellness goals

We believe it is important to remember that making just a few changes can lead to big results.

Weight Loss Support at Chapa-De

Many patients look to the Diabetes Department for support with weight loss goals. Chapa-De Registered Dietitian, Kathryn Hickok says her approach to weight loss support is to acknowledge that there are no quick solutions. Weight loss can be a frustrating journey. Kathryn talks with her patients about what progress looks like and explains the common setbacks. She celebrates gradual progress like improved sleep, skin, energy, and outlook on life. She reminds patients that weight loss will happen. Sometimes it happens when we stop obsessing over the number on the scale.

A big part of Kathryn’s role is to support patients through the emotions and insecurities that often come along with weight loss. She emphasizes the importance of positive self-talk because self-doubt is sabotage. Quieting negative voices in our minds and focusing on qualities we admire about ourselves increases the likelihood of achieving weight loss goals. It is good for overall emotional health too. You can start today by saying, “My health is important to me, but so is good food. Which is why I want to eat well while I make healthy changes to my life.”
