April Moore Memorial Scholarship: Apply Now!

Chapa-De Indian Health Auburn Grass Valley | Medical Clinic

Chapa-De Indian Health is very proud to support education for local American Indian/Alaska Native students. One way that we do this is through our annual April Moore Memorial Scholarship Program. The application is now open for the 2024-2025 school year. All local native students are welcome to apply now!

What is the April Moore Memorial Scholarship Program?

April Moore was a Member and Chair of Chapa-De’s Board of Directors for 26 years. She spent her life working to advance the American Indian community. She helped to make Chapa-De what we are today. Over the years we have grown into a robust native health center. We provide high quality and compassionate care to over 25,000 active patients. Sadly, April passed away in 2015. But her memory lives on through the April Moore Memorial Scholarship Program at Chapa-De. The program awards $1,000 to local students for their education. They must be attending or planning to attend college, or a technical, trade, or vocational school.

The application is open from now until February 28, 2024. Students must be living in or from Placer County, Nevada County, Sierra County, Sacramento County, or El Dorado County in California. They must also have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Winners are chosen by the Chapa-De Board of Directors. There are multiple awards given out each year. At least one new recipient is selected each spring. Students are encouraged to apply each year they can.

Meet Leah Ellis, Three Time Award Recipient

In 2022, Leah Ellis graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is now working on a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Northern Arizona University. She is studying to be a Licensed Professional Counselor. She wants to provide services to the native community as well as other underserved populations. Her goal is to offer mental health services in her hometown of Grass Valley. Leah has received the award three times.

“The April Moore Scholarship has supported me financially for three years of my undergraduate and graduate schooling. It has also provided me with a sense of empowerment from my local community to pursue my academic and career goals,” Leah said. “Chapa-De’s funding has allowed me to open the door to graduate education. It has helped me to feel confident in my ability to pursue the schooling required to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. I feel lucky to be supported by Chapa-De Indian Health during my academic journey. I hope to someday return this support by providing mental health services to the Native American community and other underserved populations in my hometown of Grass Valley.”
