More than 1 in 3 Americans are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. More likely than not, you or one of your loved ones knows someone who is currently living with cancer or has fought cancer in the past. Today, we are joining forces nationwide to stand up to cancer and fight for healthy, cancer-free lives for all.

What is cancer?

There are many different kinds of cancer that can affect different parts of the body. Generally, the word cancer refers to a disease where your cells divide very quickly, creating a mass or lump, called a tumor, in your body.

Tumors are masses of tissue that can spread into other parts of your body and harm them. Cancerous tumors are malignant, meaning they will spread throughout your body and are dangerous to your health. Click HERE to read more about how cancer develops and spreads.

Who gets cancer?

Anyone can develop cancer at any age, but it is more likely to develop at an older age. Almost 9 out of 10 cancer cases are diagnosed at age 50 or older. Some cancers are hard to prevent because they are genetic or because we don’t know yet what causes them. However, there are some things you can do to help avoid developing certain cancers. For example:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink
  • Do eat healthy and exercise
