LGBTQ Health
Chapa-De Indian Health Auburn Grass Valley | Medical Clinic
In June 1969 the Stonewall uprising occurred in Greenwich Village in New York City. This uprising served as the tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Following this uprising, the last day of June became Gay Pride Day. Now we use the entire month of June to celebrate LGBTQ Health Month, or Pride Month. During this month we show our support for our LGBTQ peers in a number of ways.
What does LGBTQ mean?
LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Queer. Each of these terms is a sexual orientation. A sexual orientation is a way of defining one’s sexuality or gender. When referring to sexual orientation, gender does not mean the biological gender you are assigned at birth, either male or female. It refers to the gender you identify with. Sexuality refers to how you characterize your sexual preferences.
When someone says they are a member of the LGBTQ community, it means they identify with one of these sexual orientations.
Why we celebrate
We celebrate Pride Month to acknowledge the members of our communities who identify as LGBTQ. This community has a long history of discrimination. We use this month to both reflect on that history as well as celebrate the progress that has been made in LGBTQ rights. We also use this month to recognize that we are still working towards full equality, regardless of sexual orientation.
How you can celebrate
You can celebrate Pride Month in many ways. During this month, hundreds of festivals and parades will be held throughout the country. Click HERE to see a list of upcoming Pride events in California.
