The Omicron variant is quickly spreading in our community and around the world. It is important to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19. Get vaccinated and get a booster shot when you are eligible!

The Omicron Variant

The Omicron variant is concerning many researchers and public health officials. Here is what we know so far:

  • Studies are showing that the Omicron variant is even more contagious than the Delta variant. It could cause a very swift surge in illness and this could overwhelm our hospitals once again.
  • Unfortunately, those who have had COVID-19 before can be re-infected with Omicron. Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 will provide much more robust protection against Omicron than a previous infection.
  • COVID-19 is now the 6th leading cause of death for children age 5 to 11 years old. We are also seeing more unvaccinated children being hospitalized with the Omicron variant. Everyone age 5 and over are eligible to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccinations are safe and free to patients.
  • Vaccinated individuals are also at risk without a booster shot if it has been 5 or more months since receiving the 2nd dose of Moderna/Pfizer or 2-months since getting a Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Booster shots are the best defense against the new Omicron variant.

The Importance of Booster Shots

The protection you get from vaccines can lessen over time. However, booster doses can help keep you safe! Booster doses are very common. They are a normal part of many vaccines and remind our body how to fight off an infection. For the COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots help maintain protection against COVID-19 and its variants.

Who is Eligible for a Booster Shot?

The current guidance for booster shots is based on a few factors. Age, time since initial vaccination, and which vaccine type you got all matter.

Pfizer

  • Ages 12 and older
  • At least five months after your 2nd dose

Moderna

  • Ages 18 and older
  • At least five months after your 2nd dose

Johnson & Johnson

  • Ages 18 and older
  • At least two months after initial vaccination
